The Leland James has been completely “re-invented” inside and out. Out with the old and in with the new. Inside, you will find an expansive lobby featuring a glassed-in stair from lobby to penthouse, polished concrete floors, reclaimed and wood paneling and ceiling treatments. Coffee shops and other retailers spill into the lobby, creating an active place for informal meetings, socializing, and general meet and greet.
An elevated pedestrian dock accents the retail spaces and transition to the adjacent pedestrian access way. Select retail spaces feature large sliding wood sliding doors, and office tenant suites are bright and airy with high ceilings and expansive window lines.

The Corner of Past and Present
Cool Name for a Hot Neighborhood
So, what’s up with the name? Slabtown? Here’s the back story- In the late 1800’s, this part of Northwest Portland was settled by working class families employed at the neighborhood’s lumber mills. The mills would cut off the rough edges of logs to make lumber for building, and those “slabs” of waste wood were stacked up on the streets to dry, for later use as fuel to heat worker’s homes. The stacks of “slabs” on nearly every street gave rise to the neighborhood’s nickname, Slabtown.
This Way to Tomorrow
Slabtown is being transformed from an area once dominated by industrial buildings and surface parking lots into a vibrant, high-density neighborhood district with great housing, office space, a grocery store, restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and public green spaces.
It’s an ideal location for established companies looking to relocate to a desirable Portand neighborhood, or new companies looking to stake a claim in hip corner of town. Leland James is a home for companies and entrepreneurs of every kind.

Leland James
A Man of Drive and Genius
In 1929, a visionary 36-year old entrepreneur named Leland James founded an intercity trucking company in sleepy Portland, Oregon. His one-truck company eventually grew into one of the largest long-haul carriers in the United States. He innovated every step of the way.
Early on he realized that the trucks available in the market lacked the power to climb steep mountain grades. He approached truck manufacturers with his ideas for lighter, more powerful trucks, but he was ignored. So he decided to design and build his own trucks, pioneering the use of aluminum instead of steel in chassis design, and giving rise eventually to the Freightliner Corporation, still one of Portland’s largest employers. Today, we honor his pioneering and entrepreneurial spirit with a rebirth of his namesake building in the heart of Slabtown.
The Legacy Lives On
Bridging generations, the new Leland James Building continues the legacy of its namesake. The classic brick building combines old-world quality and craftsmanship with modern design features such as high performance glazing, operable windows, a major seismic upgrade, and energy efficient HVAC systems. Its large 30,000 SF + floorplates are ideal for creative and efficient space planning. We are reclaiming the best of the past and combining it with LEED-certified design that is both functional and earth-friendly.
Stake a claim at the Leland James. While you can!
